Bold colors and chiaroscuro form the language used by Hugo to complement the expansive gestures and curving forms of his subjects—wild and unrestrained. Hugo pairs this theme of abandonment with a style that invokes Dutch Golden Age or Baroque master painters such as Caravaggio or Frans Hals. The resulting photographs—so completely steeped in a careful handling of shape, form, color, and light—transcend beyond their specific moment in time to embody an overarching timelessness. The lush and intricate images adroitly play with artifice and reality, adding up to rich, elliptical narratives that circle around the concepts of home and desire. These images of homes and gardens, porn actors and film crews, studio and location shootings are an ambiguous meditation on suburbia and its trappings, family and transgression, loss and desire, the utopias and dystopias of middle-class lifestyle. The Valley and its many-layered photographs outline the complexity of domestic life at the beginning of the 21st century, opening up new perspectives for photography through its innovative combination of staged and documentary photographs. In 1998, an English magazine asked me to go on a porn set. I flew down to Burbank Airport with my wife, and we went to the house they'd given me the address of. It was a dentist's house on Van Alden. That name had all kinds of connotations when I was in high school. Because the Valley is so haunted for me by the ghosts of childhood, all of these street names have Proustian connotations. All I have to do is to say: Havenhurst, Van Alden, Vineta, Dubois, and a flood of associations comes back to me. [...] After the first five minutes of the strangeness of it all, I started to look around, going to the bedrooms, wandering through the house. It felt like a permission to go into a house in L.A. and to imagine how someone would live their life in this house. I made the pictures for the magazine. At the Dallas Museum of Art, Baumgarten has installed by far the most expansive presentation of this legendary project yet mounted, including three hugely expansive drawings combining abstracted railway engineering monuments with a polyphony of railway names that command the walls of the vault, more than 100 photographs, and a rich selection of art materials related to the development of the artist's book. Carbon is a poetic look at the impact of the railroad on the geography, people, and history of America. It addresses the beautiful landscapes opened up and then frequently defiled by development, the human accomplishment of settling the land that came at the cost of the displacement and decimation of Native Americans, and the decline of the railroads themselves as the source of powerful metaphor as they became simply industrial transportation.

Charlie Scheips & Simon de Pury. Her work describes a visceral, vital, and vibrant world. This reissue of this book, first published in 1986, pays homage to the ongoing relevance and spontaneity of Nan Goldin's incisive photography. Her photographs, rich in color and straightforward in style, demand that the viewer look beyond their appearance to discover their depth and intensity. As Nan Goldin writes, The real memories these photographs evoke are invocations of color, smell, sound, physicality, the density and taste of life. Through a faithful and precise account of her life, The Ballad not only reveals the photographer's personal odyssey, but also provides a universal understanding of the language of men and women. women and the struggle between freedom and dependency. Over the past twenty years, The Ballad has continued to influence photography and art in general, making it a contemporary classic. Nan Goldin's tale of urban, marginal life was the swan song of an era that reached its peak in the early 1980s. Yet it captures a fundamental and transcendent element in man: his need to unite.

Die Andere Seite is a photo book by Nan Goldin.

Title: Die Andere Seite 1972-1992

Publisher: Zurigo, Alltag/Parkett, Zurigo

Publication Date: 1992

Binding: hardcover

Like Nobuyoshi Araki and others, he is a representative photographer of American private photography, and Goldin often visited Japan in the 90s, as if in response to the second private photography boom in Japan in the 90s. With his book ›Waffenruhe‹ (1987) Schmidt gained international acclaim. While taking on a new and lyrical style and printing gray as a firm color, Schmidt concentrates in ›Waffenruhe‹ on the emotional conditions of changing ideologies as reflected in the urban environment of Berlin and the lives of its inhabitants. ›I made some images which look like soup. Just like the soup that was in November,‹ Schmidt once said at the end of the 1970s about some of his earlier photographs of Berlin. Was he unwittingly alluding at this point to the soup from the fabled autumn of 1989? Schmidt doesn’t see himself as a socio-critical photographer. He doesn’t want to change the world, but resists it instead, regarding himself as a realist very much in the Brechtian sense: ›Realism consists not in reproducing real things, but in showing how things really are.‹ […]
In ›89/90‹ the wall is back again, or better: we are invited to see what is left of or near the old wall and was left by the new Berlin. Some of Schmidt's scenes look like photographs of excavations. These are quite abrupt plans: single objects or mere traces catch the viewer’s eye with a brutality or a defenselessness, as in a rendering of an act of protest. But all things stand mute. Just as in his exhibitions and books in ›89/90‹ Schmidt has done away with any direct explanations and identifying captions. As such, Schmidt gets to question the status of the historical monument or document even more poignantly. Indeed, his photographs of Berlin and its fabled wall are first and foremost representing what Heidegger once described as ›the age of the world picture.‹ For Heidegger, a world picture, when understood essentially, does not mean a picture of the world, but the world conceived and grasped as picture. That is the same way in which Schmidt is engaging the observer with the act of looking per se. […]
The complete photographic oeuvre of Schmidt is an investigation of the question in what state Germany has been, is, and (...) will be. Michael Schmidt’s pictures are unmistakably ›Deutschlandbilder‹, in the very tradition of peers like August Sander, Bernd and Hilla Becher, and Hans-Peter Feldmann, who are equally exemplary photographers of German states.

Exhibition:
Haus der Kunst, Munich, 21/5–22/8/2010

Title: Photographs since 1965

Publisher: Museum Folkwang, Essen

Release date: 1995

Cover: Softcover

Edition: First Edition

ncludes an illustrated list of works, biography, exhibition history and bibliography. 172 pp., with 112 black-and-white plates and additional illustrations. 11-3/8 x 9-5/8 inches.
